This was a very quick and easy puzzle to build, and it was a pleasure to do as Osman Hamdi Bey is such an important Ottoman painter. The quality is top-notch.
The Fountain of Life (Ab-ı Hayat Çeşmesi) was painted in 1904 by Osman Hamdi Bey, one of the most important figures in Ottoman painting, archaeology and museology. The monumental composition depicts a solitary bearded man dressed in a brilliant yellow robe, absorbed in reading beside an elaborately decorated Ottoman fountain. He stands upon a richly patterned carpet and leans against an ornate Qur'an chest, while behind him is a magnificent tiled fountain niche inspired by the historic Çinili Köşk in Istanbul. Many of the objects and architectural details were based on genuine Ottoman antiquities, reflecting Osman Hamdi Bey's role as director of the Imperial Museum and his deep interest in preserving the Ottoman past. The title refers to the legendary Ab-ı Hayat, or Water of Life, traditionally associated with immortality, while the reader introduces a complementary theme of knowledge and contemplation. The painting can therefore be understood as a meditation on life, knowledge, cultural memory and the preservation of the past, expressed through an extraordinarily detailed reconstruction of Ottoman artistic heritage.
