3000 Nathan (84.5 x 120)
Portrait of Pere Tanguy
Vincent van Gogh
Production Date 1992
Although extremely challenging, this old Nathan was a joy to build. The original work is in the Rodin museum in Paris. I was fortunate to be able to see it in person several years ago.
Portrait of Père Tanguy is one of Vincent van Gogh's most striking portraits from his Paris period. Painted in 1887, it depicts Julien-François Tanguy (1825–1894), a kindly paint dealer whose small shop on Rue Clauzel was an important meeting place for many young avant-garde artists. Tanguy often accepted paintings in exchange for art supplies and supported artists who were struggling to establish themselves.
The portrait is especially memorable for its vivid background of Japanese prints. Van Gogh places the calmly seated Tanguy against a colourful wall of images, reflecting the artist's deep fascination with Japanese art. The contrast between Tanguy's peaceful, thoughtful expression and the energetic colours surrounding him gives the painting a remarkable sense of warmth and serenity.
Van Gogh painted three portraits of Père Tanguy, and this version is generally regarded as the most visually ambitious. It demonstrates the influence of Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism and Japanese art on Van Gogh during his transformative years in Paris. The work is oil on canvas, 92 × 75 cm, and dates from 1887.
