This beautiful puzzlet was produced in 2011 for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The quality was surprisingly good.
Painted in 1937, Portrait of Dora Maar depicts the French photographer and artist Dora Maar, one of Picasso’s most important companions and artistic subjects of the late 1930s. Rather than presenting a conventional likeness, Picasso constructs her face and body through sharply contrasting geometric forms, multiple viewpoints, and bold areas of color. Her patterned clothing and angular features create a sense of tension and visual complexity, while her direct gaze gives the portrait a strong psychological presence. The work reflects Picasso’s late Cubist approach, in which recognizable portraiture is transformed through distortion, fragmentation, and expressive use of line and color.
