Holy Family
Jan Brueghel the Elder
Production Date 1974
This was mostly done by Leyla. The intricate details and fabulous quality of the brand made it a wonderful experience.
Jan Brueghel the Elder’s The Holy Family, painted around 1620–1623, presents the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child and Saint Joseph within an extraordinarily rich and detailed natural setting. Surrounded by luxuriant foliage, flowers, fruit and animals, the sacred figures become part of an abundant, almost paradisiacal landscape. Brueghel’s meticulous attention to natural detail is characteristic of his celebrated style, earning him the nickname “Velvet Brueghel.” The painting also contains subtle religious symbolism: a lamb and cross allude to Christ’s future sacrifice, while an apple held by a monkey dressed as a fool refers to the Fall of Man and original sin. The work is a fine example of Brueghel’s ability to combine religious narrative, symbolism and his remarkable fascination with the natural world.
