The Bird Catchers
Francois Boucher
Production Date 2023
This is a lovely puzzle from Anatolian, who have started to release more fine art puzzles recently. As an experiment, I built this without lining the pieces up by shape, which is my usual method. I succeeded in this endeavor, even through the tree section.
François Boucher’s The Bird Catchers is a graceful example of the French Rococo style, combining an idyllic rural setting with an atmosphere of playful romance. The painting depicts elegantly dressed young figures engaged in the seemingly simple activity of catching birds, but Boucher transforms the subject into a decorative pastoral fantasy filled with lush vegetation, soft light, and delicate movement. The figures occupy a richly wooded landscape, surrounded by foliage, birds, and rustic props, while their elegant clothing contrasts deliberately with the humble rural activity. Boucher’s pastel colors, fluid brushwork, and sensual treatment of nature create a lighthearted and theatrical scene characteristic of Rococo art. Beneath its charming surface, the bird-catching motif also carries a flirtatious suggestion of courtship and pursuit, making the painting as much about youthful attraction and leisure as it is about country life.
